Really, I don't have a favourite film. But If I must to choose...I think it would Rashomon. Rashomon is a japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa, working in collaboration with cinematographer Kazuo Miyazawa. Both are directors of 50s, Kurosawa regarded as one of the most important and influential filmmakers in the history of cinema.
This film is very interesting, for the plot and the way it is told, various characters providing alternative versions of the same incident. The film opens on a woodcutter, a priest and a commoner, the woodcutter says he found the body of a murdered samurai three days earlier while looking for wood in the forest. The priest and woodcutter were then summoned to testify in court, where they met the captured bandit Tajoumaru, who claimed responsibility for the rape and murder. Then you can see the bandit's story, the story of the samurai's wife, the samurai story (speaking through a medium) and the woodcutter's story. All stories are different, everyone lie for their own sake, these deceptions and lies shake the priest's faith in humanity.

It's a simple film, but it's really touching. Even the actors kept approaching Kurosawa wanting to know the truth, which he claimed was not the point of the film as he intended it to be an exploration of multiple realities rather than an exposition of a particular truth. The music is amazing by Fumio Hayasaka, who is among the most respected of Japanese composers.

I hope you can see this film!

  1. It's really interesting the construction of the history, well, the construction of the japanese histories in general. I think that the big different between our way to make movies and the japanese way, is that the japanese creators are always thinking in histories wich have sometimes to give to the people, i mean, a moral message. I that case, i think that the message it's something that Confuio summarize as "All are right, but no one have The Truth".
    I hope watch this movie.
    See you! (:
